 Dr. Joseph Kneer - Mercyhurst University - violin

Joseph Kneer has studied with Mary West, Milan Vitek, Herbert Greenberg, and Violaine Melancon. Kneer holds a B.M. in violin performance from Oberlin Conservatory, a M.M. in violin and Theory Pedagogy from Peabody Institute (where he was awarded both a full-tuition assistantship in ear-training and a graduate theory teaching fellowship), and a DMA in violin, also from Peabody. He has served on the faculty of the Janna Friedman Music School and the Peabody Preparatory, and was appointed to the full-time faculty of Mercyhurst University in 2012 as Assistant Professor of Violin, Viola, Music Theory, and Aural Skills. In addition, Joseph is an active orchestral player, and since the fall of 2014, he has played regularly in the first violin sections of the Erie Chamber Orchestra and Erie Philharmonic. 

Marie Karbacka - SUNY Fredonia

Hänsel, Hänsel und Gretel and Suzuki, Madama Butterfly); Opera Pops and Sizzles Scenes Program, (Malika, Lakmé and Orlofsky, Die Fledermaus); the Vivaldi Magnificat (soloist); American Opera Scenes, Erika (Vanessa) and Beth (Little Women the Musical); Don Giovanni (ensemble); Sweet Charity (Rosie/primary Marie Karbacka is currently a graduate student at SUNY Fredonia studying for her Masters in Music Education. Marie received her Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Music Education in the spring of 2014, and her Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance in 2012 from Mercyhurst University. She graduated Summa cum Laude in 2012 from Mercyhurst University. Marie was accepted into the Educational Honor Society branch of Kappa Delta Pi at Mercyhurst in 2013. She was accepted in the Collegiate Honor Society branch of Phi Eta Sigma at Mercyhurst in 2009. Marie was awarded the Academic Excellence Award annually and also was listed on the Dean’s List annually from 2008 to 2012. During her undergraduate career, Marie enjoyed being actively involved in the opera productions, musicals, scenes programs, and choir concerts at Mercyhurst. Marie graduated from Jamestown High School in 2008 as the 10th ranking-graduating senior. Over her high school career, Marie was the recipient of the Chautauqua County Music Teachers’ Association Scholarship Award in 2007 and 2008. She has also received scholarships from the Chautauqua Community Foundation numerous times. She was actively involved in all of the high school musical ensembles, as well as, the Chautauqua Regional Youth Symphony, Chautauqua Regional Youth Ballet, and the Drama Enrichment Program in Jamestown, NY. Her past performance credits include: Gianni Schicchi (Zita); the Pergolesi Magnificat (soloist); the Mozart Requiem (soloist); Così fan tutte (Dorabella); Opera Scenes Program, (dancer); Thoroughly Modern Mille The Sound of Music (Miss Dorothy); (Sister Sophia); and Beauty and the Beast (ensemble/primary dancer).

Pam Verity - Fiddle class

Pam Verity, curren t member of Blarney Rubble (traditional Irish band),and formerly of Rakish Paddy, has been fiddling- first in classical and musical pit orchestras then bands of every genre – blues, country, rock, folk, and for the last 30 years, primarily traditional Irish. Pam has studied with Seamus Quinn, Patrick Ourceau, Kevin Burke, Liz Carroll, and Martin Hayes to name a few. She has been teaching Elementary and Secondary Music professionally for 35 years, and has been teaching fiddle, guitar, ukulele and voice to students of all ages in the Tri-State area since 1999.

This 2-part workshop will focus on learning a tune or two or three, and decorating them with an ornament or two, depending on the level of the class. We will focus on learning by ear, but notated music will be provided to students at the end of the workshop. Bringing a recording device will be helpful.
