Assistant Professor - Violin - Mercyhurst University

A passionate chamber musician, Kneer founded the Aurora Piano Trio in 2008, along with cellist Hannah Pressley and pianist Linda Angkasa. The group was invited to perform in the inaugural summer concert series partnership in 2008 between the Peabody Institute and the Yong Siew Tow Conservatory, in La Loingtaine, France, and was also the winner of the 2009 Peabody Chamber Music Prize.

Joseph Kneer has studied with Mary West, Milan Vitek, Herbert Greenberg, and Violaine Melancon. Kneer holds a B.M. in violin performance from Oberlin Conservatory, a M.M. in violin and Theory Pedagogy from Peabody Institute (where he was awarded both a full-tuition assistantship in ear-training and a graduate theory teaching fellowship), and a DMA in violin, also from Peabody. He has served on the faculty of the Janna Friedman Music School and the Peabody Preparatory, and was appointed to the full-time faculty of Mercyhurst University in 2012 as Assistant Professor of Violin, Viola, Music Theory, and Aural Skills. In addition, Joseph is an active orchestral player, and since the fall of 2014, he has played regularly in the first violin sections of the Erie Chamber Orchestra and Erie Philharmonic.

Kneer is also a choral conductor. In 2012 he was appointed interim director of the Brown Memorial Presbyterian Chancel Choir in Baltimore, Maryland, and has led the forty-member ensemble in performances of Part 1 of Handel's Messiah, Brahms's Alto Rhapsody, Faure's Requiem, and Honegger's King David.
